Why we move: 4 stories of grit & heart

At Malibu Moves, movement belongs to everyone. It isn’t only about PRs or pace—it’s about showing up as you are and moving forward together. This year, that togetherness matters even more: 100% of event profits will support Malibu schools and community recovery. After the Franklin and Palisades fires, this isn’t just a race—it’s a community fundraiser.

Below are four stories that capture what “why we move” really means.

MAURICE WASHINGTON: choosing life—again and again

Maurice has lived close to the edge—multiple brain surgeries and a near-death chapter. Movement became his daily vote for life. His mantra is simple and true: health is wealth. From hospital rooms to half marathons, Maurice runs with gratitude, joy, and a deep appreciation for the miles he gets to travel. This fall, he’s building toward a dream marathon while savoring each oceanfront step.

Why we love this:

Maurice turns a finish line into a celebration of everything it took just to be there.

KEVEN TANI: from 333 lbs to ultrarunner in training

Keven is a U.S. Army veteran, husband, and dad who decided his family deserved the fullest version of him. He started moving—imperfectly and relentlessly—transforming from 333 pounds to an athlete now training for his first 100K.
“I don’t move to escape my past,” he says. “**I move to honor what’s ahead—**for my wife, for my daughter, for the man I promised I’d become.”

Why we love this:

Every mile Keven runs is a love letter—to his family and to his future.

STACY FLAIG: first race at 55, all heart

At 55, Stacy chose courage over comfort and signed up for her first-ever race. She’s running for strength, health, and the joy of proving it’s never too late to begin. Malibu is one of her favorite places, so racing in and for Malibu felt destined. For STACY, movement means staying flexible, balanced, and whole—on her terms.

Why we love this:

Stacy embodies our inclusive spirit and reminds us: every first step counts.

SARAH LOPEZ: movement as a mental-health anchor

Sarah ran cross-country in high school, but only recently did running become non-negotiable—a steady practice that protects her mental health. After losing motivation post-race, she rebuilt with patience and honesty, reaching out for guidance and returning to the joy of the process. Now she’s chasing a sub-2 half—and the calm that comes with consistent, compassionate discipline.

Why we love this:

Sarah shows how movement can be gentle, powerful, and healing.

Join the movement (and the mission)!

On October 25–26, 2025, we’ll gather at Zuma Beach for oceanfront miles along PCH, community vibes, and a festival that feels like a hug. When you register, you’re not just signing up for a run—you’re investing in Malibu’s students and recovery.

  • Distances: Half Marathon, 10K, 5K, plus 1-Mi Zuma Dash & 1K Kids’ Run

  • New: Coastal Quest Challenge — race the Zuma Dash on Saturday + your distance on Sunday and earn 3 medals + 2 shirts (and serious bragging rights)

Be part of something bigger than a finish time—sign up and move for Malibu.

Coming next: more voices, same heartbeat

In Part 2, we’ll share more powerful stories from our community—Ryan Torres, Shannon Brady (Culver Kids Run Club), Charles Stelzried, Audrey Bonneville, and Seda Batmanian. Each reminds us that movement is about connection, resilience, and hope.

If you have a story to share, we’d love to hear it. Your miles matter—and so does your voice.
